WELCOME MESSAGE

We are very pleased to invite you to the first International Conference of the Hellenic Society for Circular Economy (HSCE).

We are excited to join forces with the Circle Economy Foundation, a major global impact organization, the International Society for Circular Economy and our publishing partner Springer, an internationally leading publisher.

The conference will be held between September 11 – 13, 2024 in Chania on the island of Crete, Greece with physical presence. It is co-organised by the Laboratory of Environmental Engineering and Management, School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete, the Laboratory of Business Economics and of Environmental Technology, Department of Environmental Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, and the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movement (IFOAM) AgriBioMediterraneo.

THE VENUE

MIKIS THEODORAKIS CULTURAL CENTER

The stone building, bearing today the name of the great Cretan composer Mikis Theodorakis, was built in 1912 and originally housed the Customs House in the Venetian Harbour of Chania, located between the shipyards complex and the “Grand Arsenal”. For that reason, the building was widely known as the “Old Customs House”. Recently, it has been renovated and currently functions as a cultural and convention center, known as “Mikis Theodorakis” Theatre. The composer, Mikis Theodorakis, was himself present at the official opening of the building in October 2017.

WELCOME RECEPTION

Wednesday, 11 September, 5:30-8:30pm

The Welcome Reception will take place at the Residence – Museum «Eleftherios K. Venizelos».

About the Museum

The Museum is located in Chalepa area and was the paternal house of Eleftherios Venizelos, a Cretan Greek statesman and prominent leader of the Greek national liberation movement.

He served as Prime Minister of Greece for 12 years in the early 20th century. He had profound influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece and therefore been labelled as “The Maker of Modern Greece”.

His residence is now a museum, classified as an authentic (documentary) home, since it is recounting the life of a personage and it is preserving authentic items, most of them in their original position. More information about the E. Venizelos Foundation and the museum can be found here.

The Welcome Reception starts at 5:30pm.

If you are interested in a guided tour of the residence (20-25 min), there will be 3 groups; one will start at 5:30pm, one at 6:15pm and one at 7:00pm. Please email your slot preference (astefanakis@tuc.gr) as there is a limited number of people per group. There will be a first come first served policy on the slots booking.

The Museum is located in Chalepa, approximately 20 minutes from Chania center by foot. You can also take a taxi from downtown (~5 min, approx. 4-5 €)

TRAVEL

All participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements. Mid-September in Crete is still the peak tourist season. Early booking is strongly advised.

PLANE

Chania has an International Airport named “I.Daskalogiannis” (IATA: CHQ) (www.chania-airport.com). The airport has regular daily domestic connections to/from Athens and Thessaloniki (operated by Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and RyanAir). Domestic flights from and to the airport of Athens (Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”) are often used as connecting flights from and to major European and worldwide gateway cities.

From April to early November there are also many charter flights from across Europe in addition to the low-cost airlines RYANAIR & EasyJet. Travelers from outside Europe can break up their journey in a European city of their choice or select to keep connection time to a minimum. Such itineraries may also involve a flight connection through the airport of Athens.

The airport is located near Souda Bay on the peninsula of Akrotiri, 14km away from the city center and the conference venue.
Bus routes connect the airport with the city center (line Chania Airport – Chania). They last about 30 minutes, while the ticket price is ~ 2.50 €. You may find updated information on fare and bus routes (e.g., timetables) here.

Travelers should be aware that the international airport located in the other major city of Crete (Heraklion; Heraklion International Airport, “Nikos Kazantzakis”; IATA: HER) is 140 km away from the city of Chania (approx. two-hour drive away).

SHIP

The port of Souda offers daily boat connections from and to Piraeus (Athens). The port is situated 7 km away from the city center and the Conference Venue (about 20 min driving).

Timetable of boat trips shows on the websites of the Ferry Companies (https://www.anek.gr).

Regular bus routes also connect the port with the city center (line No13, Souda – Chania). They last about 20-25 minutes, while the ticket price is ~ 2.50 €. You may find updated information on bus routes (e.g., timetables) and bus fares here.

ABOUT CRETE

Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. Here, you can admire the remnants of brilliant civilisations, explore sandy beaches, impressive mountainscapes, steep gorges and become part of the island’s rich gastronomic culture. Crete is, after all, a small universe teeming with beauties and treasures that you will probably need a lifetime to uncover!

Crete managed to keep its unique and strong character till today. Religion, glorious history and the wild Cretan terrain formed the personality of Cretans. Apart from the scattered archaeological sites and monuments of spiritual wealth, the visitor has the chance to see the rare and priceless findings of excavations at the various museums and collections throughout the island.

In Crete, at the Diktaion Andron Cave in Lassithi Plateau, lies the birthplace of Zeus, the ruler of the gods, people and hospitality. Τhe hospitality of the Cretans is more than a ritual. The first European civilisation, the Minoans, emerged here between 2800 BC and 1400 BC. Even today, the palaces of Knossos, Phaestus, Malia and Zakros reflect the splendor of the Minoan civilisation through the masterpieces of architecture, pottery, gold, silversmithing and painting. The most powerful fleet in the then known world, as evidenced by the different findings across the Mediterranean, brought wealth to Crete from trading the famous Cretan cypress and its agricultural products. This brilliant course was terminated in 1400 BC when the Achaeans and the Dorians made their presence on the island, founding new towns (eg Lato, Polyrhenea) and gave the baton to the Classical Greek civilisation.

The Prefecture of Chania (Hania), on the western side of the island, is dominated by the impressive White Mountains (in Greek: Lefka Ori), the largest mountain range in Crete with more than 50 summits with a height over 2000 m. These mountains and its famous National Park of Samariá Gorge (the longest gorge in Europe with a total length of 16 km), which occupy the largest part of the region, providε tourist services and activities of all kinds.

The City of Chania maintains unaltered many of its characteristics, from the time of the Venetian Rule up until today.

Wandering around the Old Town’s maze-like alleys with the beautiful Venetian mansions, the fountains and the elaborate churches will help you discover well-preserved historical monuments. Get familiar with the city of Chania by wandering around in its streets, visiting its museums and admiring the different architectural styles presenting the historical route of the city.
